Recruitment
The person holding this position is tasked with spearheading Halo-17's recruitment efforts. In order to meet our goals, we require a constantly expanding pool of writers to contribute ever-larger amounts of content. This has to be done in the context of the limited funding and promotional materials available.
Recruitment efforts have two prongs - passive recruitment and active recruitment.
- Passive Recruitment refers to acquiring new staff through passive means, for instance, notices on the website, the wiki, and message board postings. Generally, there is not a specific target in mind.
- Active Recruitment refers to actively seeking out a specific individual to write for the site.
In both cases, an incentive will likely to be required to induce prospective writer/s across to our side.
Budget
A budget has been set aside by the Board for payments to writers. Currently, $AUD50 is made available per month, with totals rolling over into the following month if unspent. This represents a total budget of $AUD600 per annum. In addition, promotional materials received by Halo-17 (ie: promo CDs, concert tickets) can be used to supplement this budget.
All new appointments of writers that require payment from the budget require approval of the board prior to payment being made. Any payments may also be vetoed by the Editorial Committee or the Board Chair at their discretion (for instance, a paid writer turning in substandard work).
Working with the Editorial Committee
The Recruitment Specialist must work with the Editorial Committee to ensure that all content from recruited writers, as well as all paid content, is of a high quality.
Notes
The notes in this section are not binding upon the Recruitment Specialist, but may provide some ideas on where to start and how to do things.
Places to recruit from
There are many places that can potentially be used to gain new writers
- Existing music review websites (most writer's positions are unpaid on other websites)
- Existing websites/magazines with an indie slant
- Personal blogs, especially those dealing with music
- Communities attached to music or indie websites
Please remember our policy that while reviews may be posted to a person's personal weblog, they must not be posted to any other website. We don't want to pay people to write for the competition (ref section 2.11 of Writing For Halo-17).
